Ugandan celebrities such as Pia Pounds, Winnie Wa Mummy, Florence Nampijja, and Chosen Becky radiated patriotism as they donned the country’s national colors of black, yellow, and red in honor of Uganda’s 62nd Independence Day on October 9.
The 62nd Independence Day festivities took place at Busikho Primary Teachers’ College grounds in Masafu Town Council, Busia District, marking a significant milestone as Busia hosted a national event of such grandeur for the first time.
Under the theme ‘Independence Day: A Recommitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny,’ the day commenced with impressive parade drills by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Uganda Police, and Uganda Prisons Service, setting the tone for a day of reflection and celebration.
Honoring distinguished Ugandans
President Yoweri Museveni, the event’s chief guest, bestowed 40 national medals upon distinguished Ugandans, with 30 recipients receiving the National Independence Diamond Jubilee Medal, and others being recognized with prestigious accolades such as the Luwero Triangle Medal and the Police Long Service Gold Medal.
Leading up to the celebrations, the Office of the President collaborated with the German NGO, Bazungu e.V, to provide free eye care services at Masafu General Hospital, benefiting over 1,000 individuals and demonstrating a commitment to community well-being.
The event also attracted special delegations from the United Arab Emirates and the Central African Republic, underscoring the international support and camaraderie present at the festivities.
Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, reflected on Uganda’s historical challenges, praising the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government for ushering in an era of stability, peace, and socio-economic progress over the past four decades.
She highlighted the government’s achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic growth, emphasizing the nation’s resilience and forward momentum under the NRM’s leadership.
