Ugandan Musicians Are Very Undisciplined And We Can’t Cast Them In Our Films – John Segawa

Celebrated and legendary Ugandan playwright and actor John Segawa has revealed why Ugandan musicians do not appear in Ugandan films. He said that they have a high level of indiscipline and therefore can’t make it.

Globally, musicians have always appeared in different films. In fact, most of them even always end up ditching music for movie acting.

They include the likes of Ice Cube, Will Smith, 50 Cent among others. However, in Uganda it’s rare and only a few can be counted such as Hellen Lukoma and Maurice Kirya.

As the industry is still growing and trying to capture the home crowd, Segawa was asked why they don’t cast musicians. This is yet they have big numbers and can help in drawing viewership. He said that in films, there is no individualism. They work together as a team until the film is produced.

This is unlike musicians who always focus on taking individual glory. Besides, musicians don’t have time, focus and dedication. They are just born lucky with a talent and nothing much like film actors.

“Ugandan musicians have a lot of indiscipline and they have a lot of ego. They are people who were just born lucky with a talent. And then they have managers who tell them that they are the bosses. That’s not us in the film industry. We work as a team and nobody tries to claim individual glory,” he said.

He said all this in the aftermath of the Ikon Film Awards which happened over the weekend. These are aimed at celebrating and rewarding contributors to the Ugandan film industry. Among the notable attendees were Nigerian popular actors, Ramsey Noah and Osita Iheme.

John Segawa said that they invited them to provide inspiration to the young film actors in the country. Additionally, he said that there are lots of talent in the country. Plus there are very many good Ugandan films that will be released soon.

He also applauded the organizers of the Awards for being a positive contributor to the young industry.
