The research that was carried out by the Gallup World Poll 2020 and the results, released on Friday, 19th March 2021, showed Ugandans beat all it’s neighbors in the happiness ranking.
Ugandans managed a position of 119 to obtain a score of 4.636, followed by Kenyans with 4.607 at position of 121. Tanzanians came 3rd with 3.623.
Rwanda (3.415) and Burundi (3.775) followed at positions 147 and 140 respectively in the latest global ranking.
The analysis depended on 3 main indicators including; negative emotions, life evaluations and positive emotions.
Negative emotions
Negative affect was measured by asking respondents whether they underwent specific negative emotions a lot on the previous day.
These included sadness, anger and worry.
Life evaluation
The pollsters said they asked respondents to assess their current life as a whole using the image of a ladder, with the best possible life for them as a 10 and worst possible as a zero.
Over 1,000 respondents from each country were engaged in the study which depended on three main indicators including; negative emotion, life evaluations and positive emotions.
Based on the feedback, the averages are then used to build population representative national averages every year in each country.
Positive emotions
To establish average positive emotions of each country, respondents were asked whether they laughed or smiled a lot the previous day and whether they experienced enjoyment.
For those who said no, had their responses written as zero whilst those who confessed they experienced enjoyment and laughed a lot the previous day had their responses written as one.
“We calculate the average response for each person, with values ranging from zero and one,” the researchers explained.
