Ugandans have joined the rest of the world to celebrate world consumer rights day with consumer exhibition at Sheraton hotel under the theme trusted smart products at Sheraton hotel.
According to Salim Bari the team leader of Consumer expo says the event was held to create awareness about consumer rights and needs.
About 50 companies exhibited their products i.e. International University of East Africa, Umeme, Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Kampala Electric mart, Danube properties, Hisense,Tyre express, Total Uganda, Institute of Professional Accountants of Uganda, Presige Driving school, Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority, Cocacola and Mayondo Engineering Works among others.
“We decided to inaugurate world consumer rights day celebration with consumer exhibition where companies showcased their products and solidarity for consumer rights and needs, “Salim said.
Cuthbert Atwongeire International University of East Africa marketing coordinator who sponsored the event called upon the general public to demand and fight for their consumers rights.
“Consumer rights is a global event which should be embraced by all because we all consumers and we need quality products. It’s therefore upon everyone to join in hands to create awareness about consumer’s rights and protection bill so that manufacturers and business community sales only guanine products in the market and consumers look out for only quality products, “he said.
Every year on 15th march the world celebrates world consumer rights day to raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs however despite institutions like Uganda National Bureau of Standards, Uganda Communication Commission and Bank of Uganda in place there is little sensitization about consumer rights.
The first consumer movement was started in 1983 and now each year it is celebrated to mobilize action on important issues and campaigns. The theme for ‘World Consumers Right Day 2019’ is ‘Trusted Smart Products.
