Uganda Cricket Cranes sealed their spot in the ILT20 Continent Cup final in Kigali, Rwanda, following a tense 23-run victory over Nigeria. With a flawless record of seven wins in seven matches, Uganda’s dominance throughout the tournament was evident.
Despite the numbers, Nigeria’s spirited performance added depth to the game.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Nigeria’s decision initially paid off, as they rattled the favorites and had them struggling at 39/4 within the first nine overs. However, Fred Achellam (28) and Dinesh Nakrani (32) staged a crucial partnership, adding 55 runs to stabilize Uganda’s innings. The late flourish from the lower order propelled Uganda to a total of 151/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Nigeria’s uphill run chase
In pursuit of the target, Nigeria faced a slow start, with Uganda’s bowlers, particularly Frank Nsubuga, exerting pressure by conceding a mere five runs in two overs.
Struggling to maintain the required run rate, Nigeria found themselves playing catch-up throughout the innings. Captain Sylvester Okpe’s valiant effort of 41 runs provided a late spark, but it was not enough as Nigeria fell short of the target.
Despite a late surge from Nigeria, the team ultimately ran out of resources, leaving them 23 runs shy of victory. The close margin highlighted Nigeria’s resilience and competitive spirit in challenging the formidable Cricket Cranes.
Uganda’s triumph secures their place in the tournament final on Saturday, where they await the outcome of the upcoming matches to determine their final opponent.
