She further said that if anyone has money, then they should be going to charities and doing donations.
“I think the term socialite died with Ssemwanga if you go into the real definition of socialite. People who have genuine money don’t show off. I also believe a person who has money would go to charity and donate,” Doreen Kabareebe said.
This followed a discussion on Sanyuka TV questioning whether socialites have any impact on the entertainment industry.
Alicia Bosschic one of the present Socialites said that indeed they have influence. She cited herself as an example saying that she looks after a lot of children and has also helped to promote music of different artistes.
A majority of these socialites who are referred to as Basama usually flock the country during the festive season. The majority are from South Africa but their source of income is doubtful. Some have even been accused of forgery while others fake being traditional healers.
Meanwhile, many will forever recognize Ssemwanga as the godfather of Socialites in Uganda. The Rich Gang leader and his then-wife Zari used to turn the country upside down whenever they would jet in.
He however died a few years ago and since then, the Socialites industry hasn’t been as vibrant as in his time.
