Displaced populations are particularly at risk these days. Sports, not sports betting at tonybet.ke/prematch or themed sports video games, are known to play a positive role in people’s lives, and these organizations have played a crucial role in the movement around sports and refugees. This year, we want to celebrate the efforts of organizations working with refugees and highlight how the pandemic has impacted the lives of displaced people.
Youth Sport Uganda (YSU) working in Uganda is an organization engaged in the development for development established in 2006 to provide opportunities for education, health, and life skills of vulnerable youth from among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and urban refugees in Uganda Through the use of sports opportunities. Over the years of their activities, they have covered more than 30,000 young people with various programs in 57 schools and 5 communities with 124 prepared coaches. They work with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Health, Local Authorities, etc. To implement programs in sectors such as psychosocial and mental health, protection, health care, livelihood, water supply and sanitation, education.
What Work Do They Do With Refugees?
They have many programs working with IDPs and urban refugees, and they were also recognized by the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) for the work done by them. They have three different programs for displaced persons:
- WSG Football: WSG Soccer: In Soccer 4 WSG, they use the power of soccer to influence water, sanitation, and hygiene (WSG) behavior among boys and girls intelligence. WSG was founded by Wash Clubs at the colleges in the Kittaltale and Naguri areas, and instructors were assigned as clients of those clubs. These clubs implemented soccer-hygiene methods of spreading the statistics almost to WSG shortly after two weeks.
- Ball 3: Ball3 contributes to many social themes, such as gender equality, physical fitness, and harmony. It empowers young people to take responsibility for their actions and treat others well. They receive words of appreciation and compliments both for the industry and for the past.
- Skills Development: EHU uses soccer-based apps to provide an opportunity to engage young people who have difficulty accessing the job market and help them with education, sports to improve their job search, internships, and personal development packages.
How has the pandemic affected their work?
In Uganda, the influence of COVID-19 for the means to the existence of these refugees is already noticeable, since the access of refugees to sources of income has greatly declined. Refugees working as living workers in the low-qualified informal service sector have greatly suffered from the economic recession, restrictions on the movement, and loss of consumers. According to EHU, “among these refugees, depression, tension, and insecurity increased, which greatly affects their cohesion with host communities, so it is necessary to strengthen the support of IDPs and urban refugees. It greatly influenced the approach of our programs, and since we cannot attract refugees to Active sports, most of our programs had to rebuild in accordance with the Pandemic conditions. “
The measures that the Government [Uganda] introduced to contain the spread of the virus, such as mandatory blocking and restriction of movement, closing schools, sports facilities, and markets, as well as social distance, were greatly influenced by urban refugees and host communities, which led to serious issues with mental health. Looking into the future, “YSU now has to take into account these problems in the development of programs that will help refugees to cope with life after a pandemic. We must also develop programs that will help refugees to maintain security and while remaining active. Their mental health and psychosocial well-being are under the most mental health. Threat, and we hope that we can make more efforts to improve them. “
