The UK considers the vaccine very important for vaccination efforts in developing countries because it is cheaper to make. The AstraZeneca vaccine also happens to be much easier to store for longer periods of time. It only requires normal refrigeration temperatures.
‘’With two vaccines now approved, we will be able to vaccinate a greater number of people who are at highest risk, protecting them from the disease and reducing mortality and hospitalization,’’ U.K.’s Department of Health said in a statement.
People need to remember, however, that the disease still exists despite the fact that countries are rolling out vaccines. In this case, social distancing and the prominent washing of hands are still very vital. Not everyone has had the vaccine yet.
The U.S. federal government has ordered 300 million doses of the vaccine. It also pledged up to 1.2 billion to support its research and development. The U.K. itself has secured 100 million doses with up to 4 million doses expected to be ready by the end of the year.
The bad news though is the difficulty facing the vaccine makers due to the new virus variant. It was first detected in England and is now spreading to other countries across the globe.
