A devastating Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy has left a trail of destruction, claiming the lives of 34 individuals, including two innocent children, and injuring 117 others.
The heart-wrenching incident, which occurred mid-morning on Sunday, saw two ballistic missiles hitting the city center, causing chaos and leaving bloodied bodies strewn across the streets.
Kyiv’s Western allies have swiftly condemned the heinous attack on Sumy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as “horrifying,” while Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting, Friedrich Merz, accused Russia of committing a grave war crime.
Despite the outcry, there has been no immediate official response from Russia, whose forces are reportedly gearing up for a major offensive near the border.
In the wake of the tragedy, leaders and officials from around the world have expressed their shock and sorrow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has implored President Donald Trump to witness firsthand the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion, urging for empathy and understanding before decisions are made.
US Secretary of State Rubio emphasized that the attack underscores the urgent need to end the ongoing conflict.
International demands for justice
Leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have condemned the attack as barbaric and a flagrant violation of international law.
Calls for strong measures to enforce a ceasefire on Russia have been echoed, with a collective determination to pressure Russia until peace is restored on Ukraine’s terms.
The United Nations, through Secretary-General António Guterres, has voiced deep alarm over the attack and stressed the imperative of upholding international humanitarian law.
As the deadliest assault on civilians in Ukraine this year, the international community stands united in grief and solidarity with the victims and their families, advocating for a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
