The announcement comes as the country continues to grapple with a range of challenges, including conflict, displacement, and food insecurity.
According to the UN, the funds will be used to provide critical aid to millions of people in need across Sudan. The money will be allocated to a range of organizations, including the World Food Programme, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the United Nations Children’s Fund
Speaking about the pledge, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said,
“This funding will help to provide life-saving assistance to millions of people in Sudan who are in urgent need of support. It will enable us to deliver vital aid to those who are most vulnerable, including children, women, and the elderly.”
Something needs to be done to address the root causes of crisis
The announcement has been welcomed by humanitarian organizations working in Sudan, who have long been advocating for increased support to tackle the ongoing crisis. However, they have also noted that much more needs to be done to address the root causes of the crisis and to build more resilient communities.
In particular, they have called for greater investment in sustainable development initiatives that can help to address the underlying drivers of conflict and poverty in Sudan.
They have also stressed the need for greater support for local organizations and civil society groups, who are often best placed to respond to the needs of affected communities.
Despite these challenges, the UN’s announcement represents a significant step forward in the global effort to combat the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan. It is hoped that the pledged funds will make a real difference in the lives of millions of people who are currently in urgent need of support.
