The strikes, undertaken by the US and UK forces, have raised concerns over a potential escalation of the conflict. As tensions rise, the UN chief has emphasized the need for all parties involved to exercise utmost caution and to seek peaceful solutions.
Expressing his concerns, the UN Secretary-General highlighted the potential consequences of further escalation, including increased civilian casualties and the exacerbation of an already dire humanitarian situation.
He stressed the importance of prioritizing the protection of civilians and ensuring that any military action is proportionate and adheres to international humanitarian law.
Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, told the UN Security Council “we are witnessing the cycle of violence that risks grave political security, economic and humanitarian repercussions in Yemen and the region.”
These developments in the Red Sea and the risk of exacerbating regional tensions are alarming,” he said.
Meanwhile Russia’s ambassador to the UN called the joint US-UK strikes on Yemen’s Huthis “blatant armed aggression against another country.”
“These states all carried out a mass strike on Yemeni territory. I’m not talking about an attack on some group within the country but an attack on the people of the country on the whole.
Aircraft were used, warships and submarines,” Vasily Nebenzya said of the US and British action, supported by allied countries.
But Washington’s ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned that no countries’ vessels were immune to the threat posed by Huthi rebels to shipping in the Red Sea.
“Whether your ship flies an American flag, or the flag of another nation… all of our ships are vulnerable,” she said.
However the Secretary-General urged all parties to engage in dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. He emphasized that a political solution is crucial to a sustainable and lasting peace in the region.
As the international community closely monitors the situation, the Secretary-General called for all stakeholders to respect the principles of international law and to refrain from actions that could further destabilize an already volatile situation.
The UN Secretary-General’s plea for de-escalation serves as a reminder of the urgent need to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue.
It is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards finding a peaceful resolution that will alleviate the suffering of the affected population and foster long-term stability in the region.
