UNEB Seeking To Spike Candidate Fees

UNEB Executive Director, Mr. Daniel Odongo, says the examination body needs to raise revenue. Apparently he said this is necessary if it is to render quality services to the people that it serves.

Therefore, one of the many ways the body hopes to raise revenue will be raising candidate fees.

Parents with children in candidate classes hoping to write their national exams this year will have to pay more fees. This is more than the earlier anticipated payment following UNEB officials revealing their plans to increase the registration fees.

Over the years, costs of conducting these examinations have been rising due to the crisis in the country. This is one of the reasons why the body decided to increase the fees to ensure they cope up.

Reports show that the proposed increase for Primary Leaving Examinations will be from Shs34,000 to Shs40,000.

That of Uganda Certificate of Education will be Shs164,000 to Shs190,000 and for Uganda advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) from Shs186,000 to at least Shs230,000.

On Tuesday however, the House Committee on Education asked Mr. Odongo to explain why UNEB is trifling with hiking registration fees.

Mr. Odongo in an interview confirmed that the decisions are before the board of directors of UNEB. He revealed that once the Education Minister, Mrs. Janet Museveni reviews the proposal, a final decision will be made.

He also said that the registration fees for the last seven years have remained constant.

“We are looking at ways of raising revenue and of course the national fees have been the same since 2016 yet the costs of examination materials have gone up in the industry,” Mr Odongo said in an interview.

He further said UNEB is going to follow the necessary stages of how to ensure the tabled proposal is followed up. He also said the public will definitely be briefed once a final decision is made.
