United Nations – Schools Closed Due To Covid Should Reopen

The United Nations has insisted that schools that were closed due to Covid should be reopened. This is because an estimate of about 600 million children’s education is at stake.

According to the spokesman for the UN Children’s Fund, James Elder, “This Can’t Go On” James Elder says schools should be the last thing to be closed and the first to be opened.

“Schools should be the last to close and the first to reopen. Reopening schools cannot wait for all teachers and students to be vaccinated,” James Elder said.

James Elder is concerned for students all around the world who are not currently going to school due to Covid.

A study done by the world bank shows that the pandemic will cost this generation of students $10 trillion in lost income. This is very alarming to even listen to.

In Uganda, schools have been on and off since March 2020. There is a set of students that have never gone back to school since last year.

Some children have dropped out and are now concentrating on other things.

The number of young girls that have become mothers is uncountable. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this cycle is about to end, especially since the virus is still here.

The 42-day lockdown on schools is ending this week but the country is still waiting on the president to give direction. It’s not easy to predict whether schools will be opened or not.

In Uganda for example, only 0.3 percent of households have an internet connection. This means online education is close to impossible and very inapplicable in the country.
