The Uganda Police women’s handball team emerged victorious at the prestigious 2024 East and Central Africa championship held in the vibrant city of Kigali, Rwanda.
Displaying exceptional skill and determination, they clinched victories in all three matches against formidable opponents from Kenya and Rwanda, establishing their dominance with a remarkable tally of 135 goals scored and 80 goals conceded.
The journey to victory began with a thrilling opening match as Uganda Police faced off against the reigning champions, Nairobi Water, in a closely contested battle that culminated in a hard-fought 28-25 win.
Building on this momentum, the team continued their winning streak by defeating ES Nyamagabe from Rwanda with a commanding 46-28 victory and delivering a resounding 61-27 triumph over the University of Kigali, showcasing their prowess on the handball court.
Amidst the intense competition, Lillian Achola of Uganda Police emerged as the standout player, earning the title of the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Her exceptional skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the team’s success were instrumental in securing this historic victory.
The triumph not only marks a significant achievement for the team but also signifies the end of a prolonged drought since Uganda Railways Handball Club’s last triumph in 1996, breaking the stronghold of Nairobi Water, who had previously clinched the championship a remarkable nine times.
