Quex, a rising star in the music industry, recently voiced his disappointment with the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) after receiving a mere Shs40k as royalty payment.
In a candid interview, the artiste behind the popular track “Kachumbali” shared his frustrating experience during a visit to the UPRS offices, where he discovered the underwhelming sum designated as his annual royalty.
Expressing his discontent, Quex emphasized the discrepancy between the extensive play of his music and the meager compensation received.
He deemed the situation “unfair” and called upon the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to intervene and protect artists from such exploitation. Quex highlighted the need for a fairer system that values artists’ contributions appropriately.
While acknowledging the positive role of record labels in nurturing new talent, Quex also raised concerns about the contractual agreements imposed on artistes.
He praised the impact of labels like Swangz Avenue in shaping the industry but criticized the prevalence of unfavorable contracts that artists are compelled to sign.
Quex emphasized the importance of fair and transparent agreements to ensure that artists are not taken advantage of in their pursuit of success.
