UPDF Soldier Shoots One Dead In Kagadi

Police in Kagadi district are investigating circumstances under which a UPDF Soldier shot a woman dead. This was apparently in a scuffle over the arrest of a suspect who was perceived by the residents as an innocent man.

The deceased identified as Rebecca Masika was killed in an incident that occurred on Thursday evening at Kamina village in Kitebere parish, Ndaiga sub-county in Kagadi district.

Eyewitnesses said another man identified as Mr Ivan Tugume sustained a bullet wound. This was after being shot during the same scuffle between security forces and the residents.

Mr Solomon Wamala, the chairperson for fishermen on Lake Albert said that he was informed through a phone call that security forces had gone to arrest Mr Darlington Nsamba who hails from Kigoya village in Buliisa town.

Capt Geoffrey Sunday, the Spokesperson for the Masindi Field Artillery Division (FAD) of the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) confirmed the incident. He said it was during a joint operation when the woman was allegedly hit by a stray bullet.

“I cannot tell the name of the soldier or the policeman who shot since it was a joint operation. But I confirm that the incident happened. We have constituted an investigation team that will come out with details,” he said.

A resident of Kamina who preferred anonymity told reporters that the arrest that resulted in the shootout relates to a land wrangle. Apparently, a tycoon holding a land title is executing an eviction plan for many residents.

The incident comes at the time when the country is still mourning Col (rtd) Charles Okello Engola.

Engola was the State Minister for Gender, Employment and Industrial Relations. He was shot dead by his bodyguard on Tuesday morning.
