UPDF soldiers have been in Somalia since 2007 fighting off Al Shabaab insurgents. They are however happy after members of parliament on the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee went there for a five-day visit.
The MPs are there together with the State Minister for Defence in charge of Veterans Affairs, Oleru Gudu Abason. They are in Mogadishu to evaluate the overall performance, success and challenges of the Ugandan troops in the mission area.
Minister Oleru spoke to the troops on Tuesday and commended the president for his efforts to maintain peace in Africa. President Museveni did this through advancing a Pan-Africanism plan to deploy troops to the Horn of Africa country.
He also applauded the UPDF troops for their support, sacrifice, discipline, commitment, and hard work, among others.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank our commander-in-chief for his visionary idea to advance the Pan-Africanism plan. And also applaud UPDF for your effort, discipline and sacrifice that has ensured the success of the CIC plan to bring peace not only in Uganda but across Africa,” she said.
Rose Nyakikongoro, the Sheema Woman MP and committee chairperson applauded the resilience exhibited by the troops.
The UPDF Contingent commander in Somalia Brig Keith Katungi gave the MPs a very warm welcome and promised them safety. Other notables accompanying the MPs include Brig Felix Kulayigye, the Defence Spokesperson, commanders, officers, and combatants.
“As UPDF, security is our business where we invest to harvest peace as profits,” Brig Katungi remarked.
The first deployment of troops to Somalia happened in 2007 under the African Union Mission in Somalia. It helped bring sanity to the country and pushed other countries to follow suit.
