Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, a respected member of the World Medical Association and former President of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), is urging fellow medical professionals to align their actions with the principles of the Hippocratic Oath.
In a bold move, Dr. Obuku has mobilized a march to present a petition advocating for the medical release of Dr. Kizza Besigye to key government institutions, such as the Office of the Chief Justice, the Speaker’s Office, and the Office of the Commissioner of Prisons.
With unwavering support, over 2,500 Ugandans, including more than 1,400 medical experts, have signed the petition, boldly revealing their identities to express solidarity with Dr. Besigye’s cause.
A health crisis unfolds
The recent appearance of Dr. Kizza Besigye at Nakawa Magistrates Court, confined to a wheelchair and surrounded by tight security, marked a critical juncture. He faced formal charges of treason and was remanded until March 7, 2025, against a backdrop of deteriorating health conditions.
Amidst mounting concerns for Dr. Besigye’s well-being, medical professionals advocate for his healthcare needs to be met outside the confines of the prison system, emphasizing the imperative of prompt and appropriate medical attention.
Dr. Obuku underscores the ethical duty of the medical fraternity, asserting that neglecting Dr. Besigye’s medical needs would constitute a breach of the sacred oath they uphold.
Unity for humanity
This clarion call resonates beyond politics, urging all citizens to honor their responsibilities towards one another, transcending political divides in the pursuit of justice and compassion.
The collective voice of Uganda’s medical professionals, echoed through the diverse signatures on the petition, amplifies the resounding message: the time for Dr. Kizza Besigye’s medical release is now, uniting the nation in a stand for ethical and humane treatment.
