Urgent Call For Action: Protecting Our Children’s Mental Health

The recent surge in student suicides has caught the attention of the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among. She is urging parents to step up and prioritize their children’s mental health.

Anita expressed grave concern over the increasing number of tragic incidents in schools. From fatal accidents to suicides, she emphasized the crucial role of both teachers and parents in safeguarding children.

Highlighting the tragic death of a student at Seeta School, Anita cautioned parents against exposing their children to excessive wealth at a young age.

She stressed the importance of providing emotional support and counseling at home.

Demands for justice and accountability in school-related deaths

Calls for justice echoed as Jonathan Ebwalu pushed for accountability in the case of Joan Apiyo’s murder.

He questioned the oversight of education institutions and called for the establishment of minimum standards for schools.

Shadow Minister for Education Joseph Ssewungu highlighted the communication gap between parents, teachers, and children as a contributing factor to student suicides.

State Minister for Higher Education, Chrysostom Muyingo, assured Parliament of ongoing investigations and pledged to provide updates on the incidents.

In a related development, police in Soroti have made arrests in connection with the tragic death of 5-year-old Joan Faith Apiyo, as investigations continue.
