US prosecutors have filed criminal charges against Yuanjun Tang, a Chinese dissident residing in the US, accusing him of acting as an agent for Beijing’s intelligence service.
Tang, 67, was arrested in New York City for allegedly spying on US-based Chinese democracy activists and dissidents, as well as making false statements to the FBI.
Tang, a naturalized US citizen, faces allegations of acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and providing false information to the FBI.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that he operated under the direction of China’s ministry of state security (MSS) from 2018 to 2023, receiving instructions through various communication channels.
The DOJ claims that Tang received directives from MSS intelligence officers to monitor and report on individuals and groups deemed unfavorable to China’s interests, including prominent US-based Chinese activists and dissidents.
A journey of defiance and sacrifice
He allegedly facilitated MSS infiltration of encrypted group chats used by dissidents to discuss pro-democracy matters and criticize the Chinese government.
Reports suggest that Tang collaborated with China’s intelligence agency in exchange for the well-being of his family in mainland China.
Court documents reveal his history of opposition to the Chinese government, including participation in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and subsequent imprisonment in China. After defecting to Taiwan in 2002, he sought political asylum in the US.
The case of the Chinese dissident underscores the complex dynamics of espionage, personal motivations, and political dissent in the context of US-China relations.
