US Says Specific Steps Agreed To End Syria Violence After Israeli Airstrikes Hit Damascus

Israel’s military initiated airstrikes on both the Syrian defense ministry in Damascus and government forces in southern Syria amidst the ongoing sectarian clashes in the predominantly Druze province of Suweida.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the mission to “save our Druze brothers and eliminate the regime’s gangs,” while the Syrian foreign ministry condemned Israel’s actions as “treacherous aggression.”

The clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes in Suweida have led to over 300 reported casualties since Sunday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern but remained optimistic about resolving the situation through specific measures.

Diplomatic efforts for peace

Syria’s foreign ministry welcomed collaborative efforts by the US and Arabian parties to peacefully address the crisis.

Concurrently, Syrian troops initiated a withdrawal from Suweida following an agreement with religious leaders to address the presence of outlaw groups.

Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights shed light on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Suweida city, marked by severe shortages of water and medical supplies, raising alarms for the safety and well-being of civilians.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the military’s continued operations in Suweida and Damascus, focusing on targeting government institutions and civilian facilities.

These actions have resulted in civilian casualties and drawn strong condemnation from Syria’s foreign ministry.

The root cause of conflict

The clashes in Suweida were reportedly triggered by the abduction of a Druze merchant, escalating tensions between Bedouin tribes and Druze militias.

Despite attempts to restore order, the situation remains volatile, leading to significant loss of life on all sides.

Israel’s active involvement in the conflict highlights broader regional concerns, with Prime Minister Netanyahu underscoring the significance of safeguarding the Druze community due to their connections to Israel and the Golan Heights.

As the conflict in Suweida unfolds, the region grapples with escalating violence and uncertainty, underscoring the intricate challenges faced by Syria and its neighboring nations amidst this multifaceted crisis.
