The Opposition in the Venezuela Elections has disputed the results of the presidential election in which the incumbent Nicolas Maduro has been declared the winner.
The world thought that the South American nation was finally going to transition from a single-party rule. This has presided over Venezuela for the last 25 years.
The head of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso announced that Maduro had attained 51% of the counted 80% of the votes necessary to propel him back to power.
On the other hand, Edmundo Gonzalez, the Opposition’s strongest candidate had 44% so far. And this meant that there was no significance of the remaining votes.
Apparently, many opposition leaders and supporters in and out of Venezuela had already started jubilating both online and at polling centers.
This is because the tide looked to wave in their favor and they expected it to be a landslide victory. The Opposition is now frustrated claiming that victory was snatched from their grip.
This is due to the fact that the Electoral Commission took six hours to declare the results from the time they were supposed to be announced.
It’s rumored that the government was pondering on how to handle this matter. This is since the Opposition had already widely declared themselves as winners.
It should be noted that the Venezuelan Electoral Commission is run by Maduro’s loyalists and allies.
Besides, it’s yet to release the official results from all the 30,000 polling stations. The opposition, therefore, has no way to verify the declared results so far.
According to the Opposition figures, polling results from over 30% of polling stations showed that Gonzalez was leading with a landslide.
There is therefore no way Maduro made that major comeback. This was the incumbent’s strongest opposition ever since he took power from his mentor, the late Hugo Chavez.
Meanwhile, Edmundo Gonzalez was not known by the voters and was just brought in at the last minute as a replacement for Maria Corina Machado. He is a retired diplomat who was favored by the West.
