In a momentous occasion at the 14th Annual Diaspora Homecoming Dinner in Kampala, Prof Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the esteemed Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, was bestowed with a special diaspora award.
The recognition celebrated Dr. Muganga’s outstanding contributions to Uganda’s education sector and his unwavering support for Ugandans both at home and abroad.
During the prestigious event, Ronnie Mayanja, the Founder and Team Lead of the Uganda Diaspora Network (UDN), presented the exceptional award to Dr. Muganga.
The ceremony, held at the Sheraton Hotel on December 30, 2024, marked a significant milestone in acknowledging Dr. Muganga’s dedication and impact in the field of education.
In a poignant acceptance speech, Dr. Muganga shared his heartfelt journey, tracing back to his participation in a Diaspora convention in Toronto.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings, he expressed gratitude to the Uganda Diaspora Network for providing him with a platform to connect with his fellow Ugandans and ultimately paving the way for his return to Uganda, spurred by the encouragement of then-Vice President Hon Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi.
Fostering development through global engagement
Dr. Muganga underscored the pivotal role that diaspora members play in driving Uganda’s development, emphasizing their unique position to leverage their expertise and resources for the country’s advancement.
Drawing attention to crucial areas such as education and infrastructure, he called upon the diaspora community to contribute their insights and experiences towards addressing pressing challenges faced by Uganda.
Delving into his transformative leadership at Victoria University, Dr. Muganga recounted the remarkable growth of the institution under his visionary guidance.
From a modest student enrollment of 231 to now exceeding 10,000 students in less than five years, Victoria University stands as a testament to Dr. Muganga’s innovative approach to education.
Embracing cutting-edge technologies and fostering competencies, the university has set a new standard in academic excellence, positioning itself at the forefront of educational advancement in the country.
Nurturing holistic education
Beyond academic achievements, Dr. Muganga emphasized the importance of imparting life skills such as financial literacy and relationship management, areas often overlooked in traditional curricula.
He envisioned diaspora members as key partners in bridging the knowledge gap within the education system, highlighting the opportunity for them to make a significant impact in shaping the future of education in Uganda.
Expressing his deep appreciation, Dr. Muganga extended his gratitude to Ronnie Mayanja and the Uganda Diaspora Network for their tireless efforts in strengthening the bonds between Ugandans across the globe.

The 2024 Uganda Diaspora Homecoming Dinner brought together esteemed guests including Amb Robie Kakonge, the Ambassador of The Republic of Uganda to Washington D.C., alongside distinguished journalists and diaspora members.
