Taking to his Twitter X page, the 24-year-old wrote, “I’ll do it 10× if I have to. They are not ready.”
Edging towards Monday, which was last night, everyone largely knew that the Real Madrid attacker was the favorite to win. All odds were stacked in his favor and it was just a matter of time before he would be announced as the first Brazilian to pick up the award since Kaka in 2007.
A few hours before the ceremony, it was announced that the Real Madrid entourage was boycotting the ceremony. They were informed that Manchester City and Spanish player Rodri had won the accolade.
Indeed, Rodri was announced as the winner, having won a couple of accolades last season. The Los Blancos won the Club of the Year Award and their head coach was named the best coach of the year.
However, there was no one to receive them. Now the footballing world is up in arms calling this the biggest robbery ever in the Ballon D’or’s history.
Some referred it to racism
In fact, some have pointed out racism as the major factor in why Vini didn’t land his hands on the prize.
As much as Rodri was an exceptional player last season, Vini was undoubtedly the best player in Europe. He led his team to their 15th Champions League trophy.
He was however underwhelming for Brazil in the Copa America yet Rodri was the best player of the 2024 Euros as Spain defeated England in the final to lift their second trophy ever.
Whether Vini was robbed or Rodri deserved it, we will never know. However, the 28-year-old becomes the first Spanish player to win the much coveted individual award in football.
