However, the Gunners were not done after new signing Mikel Merino leapt onto Declan Rice’s free kick to give the home side a deserved lead.
Arsenal looked on course for all three points but were bugged by injuries to Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber. Liverpool found the back of the net through Mo Salah.
The Gunners could have taken all three points after Gabriel Jesus found the back of the net following a Kai Havertz attempt but referee Anthony Taylor gave a foul that didn’t exist to the visitors.
The game left Arsenal in the third position with 18 points. Liverpool with 22 points in the second and Manchester City are now on top with 23 points.
Mikel Arteta’s side had a blistering form last season that they are yet to recoup this season. They have suffered severe injuries to some of their star players which has hampered them from firing on all cylinders.
“Man City lost here and they won the league… I’ve read so many things that Arsenal are out of the title race if they lose. We’re in the business where you can be on top one week and then not… just enjoy the ride.”
Some critics have even already started writing them off the title race despite only 9 games being played so far. However, the Liverpool captain said that it’s too early to judge. The league is a tricky one where you’re on top one minute and off the next game.
Both sides will be in action again next weekend as the Gunners will visit a struggling Newcastle in the early kick-off. Liverpool on the other hand will host Brighton.
