News went viral recently after court in Kanungu ordered a woman to pay 10m shillings to a man. This was for violating their marriage promises.
The man had been educating the girl after she promised to get married to him. However, when time came for her to honor her part of the agreement, she refused. Her family supported her that she has the right to marry whoever she wants.
Many people showed mixed reactions to this incident, including Nyanjura. She said this is what exactly women always go through. A man promises to marry a woman and once she’s done everything for him such as giving birth, she’s dumped.
Women therefore also get hurt just like this man in Kanungu. For their case, its even worse because at times they are in abusive relationships.
What’s more hurting is that when they go to court, they are given compensation equivalent to that of housemaids.
“You probably have read about an old man in Kanungu that dragged his girlfriend to court. Apparently the man paid the lady’s fees, in return, the lady was supposed to get married to him. Men, that’s exactly how we feel wen you promise to marry us but instead marry another person.”
“Women stay in relationships, give birth to children, cook, wash. They are beaten like cows living on the promises by their men that they will officially marry them……. In the end, these men find ‘better women’. Women get hurt just like the old man in Kanungu. It’s two way.
Sadly when the women go to court, they are told they will receive rewards equivalent to house maids! What an insult! Women deserve justice too,” said Nyanjura.
Of course opinions deferred as the majority especially men disagreed with her opinion. These claimed that their input in a relationship is a lot unlike the women.
