He said if their job didn’t satisfy some, they should just go to court. This is because, as the EC, they are sure they did their job.
Byabakama, however, confirmed that he received a call from Mpuuga, leader of opposition. Mpuuga informed him that Police had arrested one of the NUP members.
Byabakama says he immediately referred him to the assistant commissioner of police who was in charge.
“He confirmed to me that he [NUP member] was arrested because they found him conducting himself in the manner which was suspicious as far as electoral activities were concerned. I could not go into details,” he said.
Regarding the cases of bribery, the EC chairperson says opposition knows what to do. He says it’s a recognisable case in the electoral procedure. If their is evidence, they should report to the police.
“The challenge we have in tackling this animal [voter bribery] is lack of willingness of the people to come forth and report these incidents to the relevant authorities. This is a recognisable offence under the electoral law. But you see like any law, it can only bite or be effective when the process requiring it to be enforced is activated. This process requires you to go and report to police,” he explained.
Byabakama said this while addressing the media about the Omoro by election that went down last week.
