Filbert Baguma, the UNATU Secretary-General, has said they have finally decided to call off the strike. He says this is for the interest of the students that have already missed so much because of the strike.
Baguma said this briefly after meeting Museveni yesterday along with other members of UNATU.
“We realized that for the interest of learners and the interest of our members, discussions need to continue. Therefore we decided to take the direction of suspending the industrial action as the discussions continue. Starting tomorrow (Tuesday), we are going back to school,” UNATU General Secretary, Filbert Baguma said.
Meanwhile, sources say this is just a cooked-up reason but the truth is that Museveni was angry.
The President said he is not ready for any new negotiations with teachers. He advised teachers to go back to class and stop interrupting Government programmes.
“I didn’t come for fresh negotiations. Those ones ended and we gave our position. I didn’t come here to hear. We know your issues, I was told you have come here to tell me something new regarding your meeting with the Vice President.”
“I don’t want a debate on this… I am not prepared. My advice is that go back and teach. Everyone is not earning well. Take an example of soldiers who are earning little but bringing peace. We don’t want to go around scattering money to everyone in small pieces because we want equity,” Museveni added.
The teachers through UNATU had promised not to return to class before increasing their pay. The arts teachers had led this strike after their science counterparts negotiated new salary payments.
Unfortunately, teachers have gone back to school without any new assurance from the government.
