“We knew we didn’t have the numbers for the #SpeakershipRace, but we chose not to be spectators. Although our numbers are few, we have a voice.”
Opposition fronted Asuman Basalirwa against Anita Among. By the end of the day, Asuman gathered 66 votes while Anita had 401 votes.
Much as the opposition winning this race was a myth, how come some opposition members didn’t vote for their colleague. Opposition has over 100 legislators in parliament. Could it be that some voted for Among or didn’t even vote at all?
Joel Ssenyonyi however said, the two speakers now should know that they are going to work for the people and not their party.
“The agenda of Parliament shouldn’t be driven by one party caucus. The two Speakers should realize they are not leaders of NRM but leaders of Parliament. The Rt. Hon. Anita Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa have got an opportunity which they can make good use of or squander,” he added.
Meanwhile, so far the Parliament is still moving on with the departure of Oulanyah and their work will commence after the wave has passed.
