WHO Requests 20 Million Vaccine Doses For Africa As Cases Rise By 13%

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested that Africa receives 20 million vaccine doses for covid-19. This is to ensure that those who received their first dose also get the second dosage as the cases have drastically risen by 13%

In the past three weeks, cases of the coronavirus have been decreasing steadily in Africa, however, there are reports of an increase in cases.

The WHO has reported its latest figures saying new cases are over 4.7 million including 128,000 deaths. The organization said this represented a standing 17% rise over the previous week.

Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO regional director for Africa says she is concerned. She however said it is too early to tell whether Africa is on the verge of a third wave.

‘’While it is too soon to say if Africa is seeing a resurgence, however, we are seeing increases in a number of countries. We are monitoring the situation very closely. And we see that we are balancing on a knife’s edge,’’ she said

Moeti added saying that this is the reason why a rapid rollout of the covid-19 vaccine is very important right now.

She further revealed that South Africa accounts for nearly one-third of the new cases reported by the World Health Organization. She feared that the new strains of the virus in South Africa have started to spread in neighboring countries.

Namibia and Zambia are among the 11 countries noted to be having a rapid increase in cases.

Moeti appeals to countries that have vaccinated their high-risk groups to share their excess doses with Africa. She didn’t fail to recognize France for being the first country to donate tens of thousands of doses to Africa. This is just from its domestic supply.

WHO also said the European Union has pledged over 100 million doses for low-income countries in Africa.

The United States has also promised to share 80 million vaccine doses with low-income countries in Africa. Other wealthy countries will follow suit.
