Why Are Most Media Personalities Opening YouTube Channels Lately?

The rate at which media personalities are opening up YouTube channels is amazing. This platform has been in place for a long time but with little attention from a greater number of people in Uganda. Suddenly, however, it seems like it’s mandatory for every media personality in Uganda to have a YouTube channel.

I mean, most of them already have platforms to share their ideas. Why are they running to YouTube? Some have even gone to the extent of quitting their jobs just to have time for their channels on YouTube. We can give so many reasons as to why this is happening. However, the major reason here is to have some sort of independence from media owners.

Most of the media personalities claim that it is hard to give fair and balanced information to the people on a normal TV or radio program.

This is blamed on their media owners who are always in the rush to publish stories as they come even before research is made. To them, YouTube channels give them the opportunity to research and do investigative journalism to the dot.

Also, the recent censoring on especially Television programs forced most of the media personalities to create YouTube channels. Recently UCC suspended a show on Urban TV under claims of being part of cyberbullying.

They need to have freedom of expression that has forced so many media personalities to run to YouTube. They want to have enough time to deliver all they want.

However, the recent move of the Uganda Communication Commission to register even the online media outlets may affect these channels as well.
