Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, raised concerns about the fairness of her husband Dr. Kizza Besigye’s trial, labeling it a “travesty of justice.” Byanyima pointed fingers at President Museveni and General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, accusing them of manipulating the trial for political motives.
Byanyima criticized the military court’s lack of impartiality, alleging that it is under the control of President Museveni and his son.
She denounced the charges against Besigye and his associate as politically motivated, aimed at stifling dissent and opposition voices.
Despite the grim circumstances, Winnie Byanyima pledged to continue advocating for human rights and justice in Uganda.
She expressed her lack of faith in receiving a fair trial but affirmed her determination to stand by her husband and uphold the values of equality and justice.
The use of military courts to prosecute civilians, including prominent critics like Dr. Besigye, has sparked condemnation from human rights organizations and opposition leaders.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have urged Uganda to uphold constitutional principles and international standards by ensuring judicial independence in legal proceedings.
