New Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has aimed a sly dig at Spain ‘s 2024 Euro winner, Nico Williams. This is after he turned down a golden chance to join the Catalonia club.
Szczesny said that such players “have no balls” if they decline the opportunity to sign with Barcelona.
Williams ultimately decided to stay in Bilbao. Although the Blaugrana have been performing well without Williams, they have had several injury setbacks in the 2024–25 season.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the club captain and first-choice goalkeeper, has been one of those ruled out due to a significant knee injury.
Wojciech Szczesny, a 34-year-old goalkeeper who previously played for Juventus and Arsenal, has come out of retirement to fill goalie duties in Catalonia. He told Sport that he is excited about the opportunity to work with Barcelona.
“When the phone rings and it becomes a reality when you have it and it only depends on you, on your decision… You can think, imagine, plan… And you ask yourself: ‘Can I say ‘no’ to Barca?’ And the answer is that you can’t say ‘no’. If you say ‘no’ to Barca, it’s because you don’t have the balls or bravery for a challenge like this.”
Following his major summer career call, fans have quickly pointed out that Szczesny’s remarks suggest that Williams was the ultimate target. Some think the 22-year-old was “unintentionally bodied” by the Polish.
Although interest in Williams is unlikely to wane, Barcelona may eventually take him on as one of their players. For now, the Blaugrana are seeking elsewhere for motivation.
When domestic play in Spain resumes following the international break, Szczesny will be eager to make his debut for his new La Liga employers.
