Women Activists Arrested For Rioting Over High Commodity Prices

Police has this morning arrested Women activists over rioting in objection of high commodity prices. These women were led by Doreen Nyanjura, the deputy Lord Mayor. They were around Mulago-Wandegeya expressing their displeasure at the rising commodity prices and continued detention of Kizza Besigye. Last week, Police arrested Dr. Kizza Besigye for protesting over the same matter but up until now he is still in Jail.

The president in his recent speech said there is nothing the country can do about the high commodity prices. He asked people to be patient and find alternatives. According to him, the prices will gradually drop but as of now, people should be patient. He rather advised people to engage in agriculture to subsidize the economy.

“Removing taxes or subsiding imports is suicidal and a blunder. I had sympathy for locally produced goods like sugar, and cement because if people buy more of them, it would be good. This was until I went to cabinet and looked at taxes we would lose. Removal of taxes would mean tax loss to government. How then, do we fund our budget for roads, security, schools and health among others?” Museveni said

However, Besigye said Museveni too must feel the pinch by cutting the statehouse costs.

“How do you tell people to cut on expenses when you are living extravagantly. He has not talked about what we have been saying that in such a situation, reduce on the cabinet because you do not need 80 ministers.”
