Appearing before the UN Committee against torture in Geneva, the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, defended the government of Uganda on torture. He said that the commitment to protect people against this has remained “resolute”.
Further, he also denied the existence of safe houses most opposition supporters claim to have been detained in and tortured for their political beliefs.
Additionally, he told the UN Committee against torture that they were being fed with false reports. Apparently , this is on complying with judicial orders by Hon. Kyagulanyi.
However, as Kiryowa Kiwanuka concluded his report, Ugandans wearing outfits and pictures of those allegedly tortured & killed by the Ugandan government stormed the session. These were 5 women and all shouted “Uganda is bleeding, the AG is a liar”.
The protest lasted for about two minutes as members of the committee looked on in disbelief. The protest audio was muted by the UN and later called security to escort them out of the committee session.
They were were temporarily detained by the UN security and ordered to delete all the content recorded. They were after handed over to the Swiss police for interrogation. Later on, they were released without any charges.
