Yoshihide Suga Elected As New Prime Minister By Japan’s Parliament

A parliamentary vote on Wednesday elected Japanese ruling party leader Yoshihide Suga as prime minister. This makes him the country’s first prime minister in nearly eight years. Suga’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party used its majority vote in the powerful lower house of parliament.

He came into power to lead the world’s third-largest economy as it tries to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. Following the vote, Suga is due to enter the PM’s office as the new leader and name his cabinet later on in the day.

Suga’s appointment 2 days after he won LDP’s leadership brings an end to Shinzo Abe’s record of nearly 8 years on the job. Suga served previously as Abe’s right-hand man and has pledged to keep in place his predecessor’s policies.

Yoshihide Suga comes from a rural area in Northern Japan and he had a job at a cardboard box factory when he first moved to Tokyo. Throughout his University, Suga worked before he started to focus on his political career as a secretary to a politician. His first election into parliament happened in 1996.

While he pledges to pick reformers for his cabinet, reports say he already decided to keep key players from the previous cabinet. These include Finance Minister Taro Aso and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi among other key players.

Abe’s younger brother, Nobou Kishi, will become the defense minister. The current defense minister Taro Kono will take over as the minister for administrative reform.

Other leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Suga on twitter.
