“FDC knows what happened and they are trying to go for the soft target which is NUP because I am sure they didn’t even get “their own votes”. They are trading intellectual dishonesty,” Mpuuga said.
Mpuuga actually said that as a party they left their members to vote whoever they wanted. Apparently, they didn’t decide who to rally behind in the speakership race because they didn’t have a candidate.
“I have never been part of any platform that ordered our members to vote for a particular candidate for Speaker. We had a liberal discussion about the possibilities, it didn’t make sense for us to order our members to vote anyone.”
Ssemujju and Nsibambi accused NUP MPs of conniving with the ruling NRM legislators to cause their misery. Ssemujju who wanted the speakership role got only 15 votes while Yusuf Nsibambi got only 35 votes. It should be noted however, that FDC also has 35 members of parliament so who did they vote for if not Ssemujju.
FDC and NUP have been having a social media fight with each other of late due to the same. On top of this Joel Ssenyonyi, NUP spokesperson, went ahead to say on a radio show that there was no opposition in the speakership race.
We don’t know if this is opposition is going to run in parliament but they may need to go back to the drawing board.
Meanwhile, Mpuuga advised FDC that the next time, they want to compete for any position they should be convinced.
