Youth And Men Embrace HIV Self-Testing In Uganda’s Mbarara City

In Mbarara, Uganda, a significant rise in HIV self-testing is observed among young people and men, with 5,000 individuals in Mbarara City opting for this initiative. Recently, on the occasion of World AIDS Day, hundreds of university students from Mbarara University of Science and Technology gathered for a voluntary HIV testing and counseling event, showcasing their commitment to health awareness.

World AIDS Day, marked annually on December 1st, serves to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and remember those who have succumbed to the illness.

The event in Mbarara City witnessed a remarkable turnout of both male and female students, reflecting a strong dedication to prioritizing their well-being.

The echoes of Philly Lutaaya’s poignant songs, a renowned HIV/AIDS advocate, reverberated through the air, as young individuals eagerly queued up for voluntary testing.

Tracy Namara, a student at Mbarara University, emphasized the importance of supporting those living with HIV and knowing one’s own status.

The surge in self-testing, as highlighted by Shamim Naiga from Human Diagnostics Uganda, underscores the positive impact of initiatives like OraQuick. The accessibility and comfort of self-testing kits are encouraging more individuals to undergo testing and seek necessary care and counseling.

Empowering youth with convenient testing options

Laboratory technologist Naigaga Margaret Obira shared insights on the preference of young people for self-testing kits like OraQuick due to their convenience and painless nature.

The user-friendly aspect of these kits compared to traditional testing methods is breaking barriers and encouraging more youths to take charge of their health. With proper guidance, participants swiftly received their test results, facilitating prompt action and follow-up care.

Docus Twinabeitu, the HIV/AIDS focal person for Mbarara City, highlighted the growing acceptance of HIV testing among men and youth, attributing it to the convenience of self-testing kits.

Targeted outreach programs reaching individuals at their workplaces and engaging youth in interactive initiatives have proven successful in promoting testing and fostering a culture of health awareness.
