A former Makerere University student, Yusuf Sserunkuma has hit back at Makerere University after the University wrote a social media notice disowning his PhD credentials.
In a notice addressed to all media houses and the public signed by the University’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Ritah Namisango, MUK stated that the University doesn’t recognize him.
They said that despite his claims that he’s a political theorist based there, they have no knowledge of him.
The University further said that Sserunkuma enrolled for a University-funded five-year interdisciplinary PhD program in social studies. This also included a master’s degree component.
Additionally, the letter says that he unfortunately failed to meet the academic requirements to progress to the PhD stage. He was subsequently terminated from the program in accordance with University policies.
Therefore Mr. Serunkuma does not hold a PhD from Makerere University. He is not currently affiliated with the University and has no ongoing relationship with the institution.

Sserunkuma quickly took to his X page to dismiss this letter. He said, “You should have addressed my name well — as Dr Serunkuma. You now have the challenge to come up with a fake letter of my termination. Bse I haven’t seen one. You haven’t implemented Justice Mugambe’s 2020 judgment, but you are instead misrepresenting me. I still need my second PhD from MUK.”
It should be noted that the said student beat the University in Court in 2020. Justice Lydia Mugambe ended the 5-year battle between Prof Mahmood Mamdani-versus-Yusuf Serunkuma war over supervision of the graduate student’s PhD thesis.
Sserunkuma, a ‘graduate’ from the Makerere University Institute of Social Research (Misr), ran to court in 2018.
This was after Prof Mamdani canceled his doctorate over various issues. Meanwhile, the University filed an appeal which is still in Court awaiting ruling.
