The shooting happened just after midnight in the village of Puy-de-Dôme. Police officers were rescuing a woman during a domestic violence incident in a hamlet, according to local news outlets.
What happened in Puy-de-Dome?
The woman had apparently taken refuge on the roof of a house, local authorities reported.
Police approaching the house shortly after midnight quickly met gunfire. The man shot two officers trying to approach the house, which has now been set on fire. One officer died of his injuries on site. Emergency officials took the second to hospital with a thigh wound.
At least seven members of the GIGN, France’s elite policing unit, are at the scene, a source has told reporters.
The GIGN carries out missions relating to counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance of national threats and protection of government officials.
The shooter also fired on two further officers responding to the scene. Unfortunately, they died instantly according to the Clermont-Ferrand prosecutor’s office.
Authorities had already rescued safely. At least seven elite tactical police officers remained on site.
“The greatest precautions are being taken with regard to the dangerousness of the individual,” a source close to the investigation told the press.
Firefighters are at the scene, bringing the blaze under control, according to reports.
The gunman is also apparently known to authorities for charges relating to child custody issues. The operation on Wednesday was related to “intra-family violence,” according to a local news agency.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the man died in the house fire or managed to escape, French public broadcaster France Info reported, citing the mayor of Saint-Just, Francois Chautard.
