After 10 Years Of Extinction, The African Painted Dog Surfaces Again In Uganda

The long-gone African painted dog has surfaced again in Uganda after 10 years of extinction. This was revealed by Thomas Price, the Managing Director for Conservation Through Commercialisation centre(CTC).

“I am happy to say we imported our first two African painted dogs from South Africa. They are the only African painted dogs in Uganda having got extinct 10 years ago,” Price said.

Price adds that much as they were similar dogs as these, they couldn’t prove them as African Painted species. They suspect that those might have come in from Sudan. This is why they deemed the African painted dogs distinct.

“Currently they are as good as extinct because nobody has credible evidence of the animals. There were some rare sightings in Kidepo but we don’t know if they were the ones or they were misidentified. We also suspect that these were just trespassing from South Sudan because there is a small population of the animals in that country.”

Meanwhile, you can identify this African painted dog from it’s fluffy white tail, tri-coloured coats and big Micky-Mouse ears. These dogs are very colorful and appear in Africa once in a while. They hunt large prey like wildebeests, zebra and impala. These dogs tend to avoid forest areas because of their hunting preferences.

Also, these animals are popular for their determination when it comes to persuing their prey. Unfortunately, though, they killed most of these because farmers believed these dogs were feeding on their livestock.

However, now that they are here, perhaps this too is going to boast the tourism industry.
