Risper Muthoni the Airbnb manager told the media that the man who booked the apartment on Saturday at 3PM checked out on Sunday in the morning.
She was, however, called by the Airbnb caretaker shortly afterward and alerted that there were suspicious-looking polythene bags and a bedsheet soaked in blood outside the stairs.
The murder comes barely days after socialite Starlet Wahu was found murdered in an apartment in Nairobi’s South C.
John Matara who was captured on CCTV camera getting into the apartment with the deceased was traced by detectives to Mbagathi hospital. He had checked in for treatment with stab wounds and was arrested.
The tragic murder of Starlet in an Airbnb has also seen a focus shift on the safety of such accommodations.
The online accommodation booking that revolutionized the travel and hospitality industry has come out to clarify. They said that the apartment in which the murder happened had not been booked on its platform on the dates of the incident.
They added that the term Airbnb is often used as a catch-all term to describe the entire booking industry. This is even when the property is listed on other platforms.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of this shocking event, but it is important to make clear that this is not connected to Airbnb in any way. The property in question did not have a reservation booked on Airbnb for the dates reported. We do not have an account registered to the name of the accused. Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time,” the company said.
