All School-age Going Children Must Go To School

The Ministry of Education has said that all children that have reached the school-going age of six must go to school. The state minister for education, Dr John Chrysestom Muyingo said all is set for schools to open for the first term.

On that note, he directed all children who have attained the age of 6 to join school without fail.

“I appeal to all members of the public to ensure that all our children who have attained the age of six and beyond join primary one as the schools open for term one, no reason must be given for a child not to be at school,” the minister stated.

He assured that all schools countrywide made the necessary preparations to receive learners after the long holiday of 2 years.

Furthermore, he thanked the parents who have endured everything to take good care of the students. He further asked them to continue doing the same for the good of the children.

He made all these comments as he spoke to a radio station on Sunday evening to confirm the opening of schools.

According to the ministry of education, the 2022 academic year is expected to open today on January 10. This is for the primary, secondary, technical/farm schools and community polytechnics.

It will run form 14 weeks and is expected to close on Friday, April 15, 2022. The second academic term is expected to open on May 9th, 2022, and end on August 12, 2022.

It is however not clear how many children were expected to join primary one countrywide. This is given that they have missed two academic years. Therefore, schools are expected to see a bigger number of entrants.

Explaining on the fees arrears, the minister urged schools to sit down with the parents. They have to agree on how to pay the fees.

He also said the continuing students who are now joining the next class should not be told to pay again.

He also warned schools against inconveniencing learners by asking them to pay unnecessary money including that for Covid-19 tests.

This is because the Ministry of Health will take charge of monitoring the students’ health while at school.

“We appeal to schools to avoid creating unnecessary charges for learners, our parents have already been affected by the Covid-19 lockdown, and many donors have money,” the minister said.
