Apple released its new iPhone 12 yesterday and it is said that it could help change filmmaking in a big positive way. The newly announced iPhone 12 includes tools that filmmakers used to buy at tens of thousands of dollars.
Since the pandemic started, film industries shifted to more remote methods of working. These methods might just be on their way to acceleration from production to post and VFX.
On Tuesday, Apple announced the iPhone 12, the first iPhone with 5G capabilities, and a list of new features. The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max were unwrapped with capabilities from Dolby Vision support to an integrated Lidar scanner. It’s new still and video camera system was introduced with a wider view, longer focal lengths, and a new Apple ProRaw format.
‘’Traditional filmmaking workflows will change dramatically. This is because 5G access will begin to eliminate the need for shuttle drives for sound and picture media.’’ suggests Michael Cioni a senior VP innovation at Frame io.
Special effects for films;
The new iPhone has visual effects artists dream of. It possesses Lidar, HDR, and many other camera improvements. Previously, doing all these things would require going to movie sets and using different equipment that would be very expensive. The thought that one has them all combined in their pocket with such processing power and a rocket speed connection is a bit futuristic for 2020.
Some of these technologies like 5G in particular have been ‘overhyped’ but there is potential for that to change. Filmmakers will have a feast, now that there is a single device with all these technologies embedded. The realization that we can do more than ever before will start. One will be able to take them all together, in context, and experience real value.
iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The starting price will be $999 and $1099 respectively.
The production line also includes the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini which will start at $799 and $699 respectively.
