Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday lost his 12-year grip on power as Israel Prime Minister. This was after the Israeli parliament voted for a new coalition government.
The Knesset declared Naftali Bennett a right-wing nationalist as the new Prime Minister. He will lead a new government of change.
Bennett narrowly won the majority rule with 60-59 votes from a coalition of parties.
Bennett will govern as Prime Minister in a power-sharing government until September 2023. He will then hand over power to Yair Lapid the leader of the Centrist Yesh Atid who will lead for the remaining two years.
Netanyahu is an influential figure both globally and in Israelis politics. He will remain the head of the right-wing party and leader of opposition.
Netanyahu who was clearly devastated declared in the parliament that “we will be back” before congratulating Mr Bennett.
Netanyahu first served in 1996-1999 before serving another long spell from 2009-2021.
Palestinians who are at war with the Israelis however did not jubilate at the news. These maintained that such a move was not of any fruits to ending the war.
“This is an internal Israeli affair. Our position has always been clear, what we want is a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital,” a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said.
Many are waiting to see how the new government will deal with the Palestinian war that has seen gross violation of human rights.
