In a thrilling match at King’s Park in Bweyogerere, the Black Pirates secured their third consecutive win in the 2025 National Rugby Premiership by defeating the seasoned newcomers, Victoria University Sharks, with a final score of 28-13.
The first half was a spectacle of errors from the hosts and swift maneuvers from the visitors, particularly evident at the defensive breakdowns.
The Sharks started the game aggressively, keeping the Pirates pinned in their half. It came as no surprise when Victoria University took the lead with a penalty kick from Isreal Makokha.
Despite the Pirates launching several attacks, the Sharks stood firm, causing turnovers with Alema Ruhweza and Humphrey Tashobya leading the defensive charge.
However, the Sea Robbers persisted, ultimately breaking through as Eliphaz Emong scored near the posts, with William Nkore converting and adding a penalty to secure a 10-03 lead.
As the Sharks attempted to mount a comeback, Makokha missed a crucial penalty kick, setting the stage for intense gameplay.
A pivotal moment unfolded when Tashobya prevented Elvin Odiambo from scoring after a lineout-maul sequence, showcasing the Sharks’ resilience in defense.
Shifts in momentum
The second half saw Nkore adding more points for the Pirates through successful penalties, while the Sharks struggled to find their rhythm.
Despite facing challenges, the Pirates maintained their composure, even as they were temporarily reduced to 14 men after Isaac Massa received a yellow card.
The Sharks seized this opportunity but were unable to capitalize fully, with Kivumbi eventually breaking through for a try, though the conversion was missed.
Building on their lead, the Pirates displayed expansive rugby, leading to Allan Karuhanga extending their advantage. With Conrad Wanyama setting up the play, Karuhanga exploited a gap in the Sharks’ defense to score.
The Black Pirates continued their relentless pursuit of points, with Roy Kizito crossing over after a series of swift passes, bolstering their lead further.
Despite the Sharks’ valiant efforts, the Pirates maintained control of the game, showcasing impressive teamwork and determination.
