Celebrities in Uganda have decided to use social media specifically twitter to condemn police brutality.they are pushing the hash tag, ‘#StopPoliceBritalityInUganda‘ it was started by known media personality Tina Fierce the former host of Sqoop on Swoop show on Urban Television. She called upon her fellow media personalities and also other celebrities to join in this campaign.
It started immediately after the nominations days that were filled with a lot of brutality from the police and the army especially on the last day. Robert Kyagulanyi was one of the victims of these brutal acts plus Patrick Amuriat.
Celebrities and also Ugandans at large embraced the hashtag. They want the state to do something about the brutal acts of the police.
Enmity sidelined for one voice;
Media personalities like Joseph Sabiti, Daniel Lutaya, Lynda Dane, Sheila Salta among others have taken on this campaign. Most surprising was Sheila Gashumba who jumped on the train too. Strangely, Tina Fierce and Sheila Gashumba have never seen eye to eye but if only this they agree then it must be a big deal.
Musicians on the other hand have not come out to say a thing about campaign. Actually John Blac received a lot of back lash from his fans. He instead announced his forthcoming new song and didn’t say anything about the police brutality.
We can’t know whether the musicians are just afraid of they don’t want to seem like they are taking a political side.
The authorities have not yet come out to say anything about this campaign. Meanwhile, Enaga and the IGP condemned the brutality from the police on 3rd November 2020.
No campaign is too small when people unite, we are yet to see how far this will go as well.
