Chelsea FC’s new Italian manager Enzo Maresca has excused the club’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez over a racist chant he made towards French players after his nation’s Copa America victory.
The former Benfica midfielder came under heavy criticism after an Instagram live video he live-streamed showed Argentina’s players singing a chant deemed racist aimed at French players.
Despite a couple of his teammates singing the chant too, Enzo was singled out as the scapegoat.
Chelsea and the Premier League put out statements condemning the incident. They also revealed that they have launched an investigation into the matter as there is no room for racism in football.
Chelsea’s French footballers Wesley Fofana and Axel Disasi also came out to condemn this chant. They quickly pointed out a huge dressing room problem for Maresca who has just joined the Blues from Leicester City.
Speaking about the incident, Enzo Maresca said that the good thing is that Enzo apologized. And all humans make mistakes, so a big deal should not be made out of the incident.
Read his statement below;
“It’s obviously a really difficult situation. I think Enzo (Fernandez) quickly acknowledged he did wrong. He put his hand up and apologized to the club, the team, and the people offended. I have spoken to Enzo and everyone involved but those conversations have to stay in-house. He hasn’t arrived yet so I don’t know if there is anything to amend. I hope everyone will be on the same page and we can move on from the situation.”
Meanwhile, the footballer was recently honored by his former club, River Plate for winning the Copa America with La Albiceleste. Argentina as a nation has come under heavy criticism for being one of the most racist nations, especially towards black people.
