Children Under 2 Years Should Not Wear Face Masks – Doctors Warn

It’s not necessary for children under 2 years to wear face mask, according to Dr Onyancha Pacifica, the acting director, Medical Services Preventive and Promotive Health in Kenya.

During an interview with journalists on Tuesday at Afya House in Nairobi, Dr Pacifica explained that children are too fragile and when they put on face mask, it reduces the supply of oxygen.

The same applies to 5 year old toddlers while at home and in a vehicle should also avoid wearing face mask to prevent them from suffocating, ‘she said.

‘Am appealing to all mothers wherever they are regarding wearing face masks. Toddlers are too fragile, I therefore want to make it clear that during this coronavirus pandemic kids under the age of 2 years are not recommended to wear face masks simply because they reduce the supply of oxygen. We all need good health not only to prevent coronavirus but also other ailments,’Dr Pacifica added.

Dr Pasifica advised all guardians and parents to take a good care of  their mental status, which is indeed very important.

All those looking after toddlers must have a good mental status,’Dr Pasifica explained.

For all those in need of psychosocial support should go ahead to seek help to avoid injuring a child.

Dr Pasifica went ahead and encouraged mothers to continue breastfeeding their children even after they test positive for coronavirus.
