Portugal and Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been slammed on social media after he claimed that winning the Euros with Portugal is equivalent to winning the World Cup.
The 39-year-old scored his 900th career goal last night in the UEFA Nations League game against Croatia.
Reacting about this milestone, the former Real Madrid striker says that this seems like another milestone. However, only he knows the amount of hard work he had to put in to achieve this feat.
He was then questioned whether he dreams of winning the World Cup and whether it’s his motivation to continue playing for the national team.
He quickly said that he has already won two trophies that he wanted with his country. Besides, winning the Euros with Portugal is the same as winning the World Cup.
“900 goals seem like any other milestone. But, only I know how hard it is to work every day to score your 900th goal. It’s a unique milestone in my career. I don’t break records… they haunt me!”
“Portugal winning Euros is equivalent to winning a World Cup”. I’ve already won two trophies for Portugal that I really wanted. I’m not motivated by that. I’m motivated by enjoying football and the records come naturally.”
However, fans quickly slammed him and accused him of taking an indirect dig at Lionel Messi. For several years, Ronaldo had always stated that winning the World Cup with his country would be a dream come true.
In his own words, he said that the World Cup is the biggest honor and prize for a footballer. However, his performances in the 2022 World Cup were below par as Portugal crashed out in the Round of 16 to Morocco. It’s not the first time that he’s downplaying accolades his rival Messi has won.
